Mean Girls

Westend & Broadway

The Broadway musical Mean Girls, based on the hit film, premiered at the August Wilson Theatre and brought the world of North Shore High to the stage with sharp humour and vivid theatricality. FRAY Studio worked closely with director Casey Nicholaw and set designer Scott Pask to create a fast paced, highly adaptive video environment that matched the show’s wit, energy and escalating drama. The aim was to help build a visual world that could shift quickly between realism, satire and surreal exaggeration.

The video content offered a window into the inner lives of the characters, revealing their personalities through distinct visual languages. For Janice, the show’s self described art freak, the content was drawn with markers and carried a rough, unpolished quality that reflected her outsider status and creative edge. Regina George, the reigning queen of the Plastics, was introduced through a glossy pink world that matched her controlled exterior. As Regina’s storyline darkened, her visual world shifted into a heightened operatic space inspired by James Bond title sequences, signalling her embrace of power and revenge.

Throughout the musical numbers, the video worked in close coordination with the choreography, lighting design and live band. The rapid transitions and visual punctuation helped extend the action beyond the physical stage, giving scenes a cinematic rhythm and supporting the vibrant tone of Tina Fey’s writing. The content underscored jokes, heightened emotional beats and reinforced the constant social manoeuvring happening at North Shore High.

The result is a dynamic visual layer that enhances the humour, pace and personality of Mean Girls, helping the production capture the spirit of the film while expanding it for the Broadway stage.
