J Balvin
J Balvin headlined the 2020 Fortnite Afterlife Party on Halloween, an in game concert that continued Epic Games’ exploration of large scale virtual events and innovative music performances inside Fortnite. Blink Inc produced the xR performance and invited FRAY Studio to join the project, creating a collaboration that brought together studios committed to advancing what xR can achieve.
FRAY Studio was responsible for Act 1 of the show and developed all content using Notch as the real time engine. The aim was to build a virtual world that captured the spirit of Halloween while giving J Balvin a dynamic and playful environment to perform within. The centrepiece of the design was a three dimensional sculpted pumpkin that served as the primary stage platform. This structure was surrounded by animated elements that could shift and react during the performance.
The world included a fully animated lighting system, trap doors and elevators designed to move the artist through different layers of the scene. A large flying bird carried J Balvin across the space, while giant spider legs emerged from the pumpkin and extended upward, lifting the entire platform high into the virtual air. All elements were created to respond in real time, allowing the performance to unfold with a sense of scale and momentum that matched the music.
The result is an imaginative and technically ambitious virtual environment that helped define the tone of the Fortnite Afterlife Party and demonstrated the creative potential of real time xR performance.
