Frozen
Disney’s Frozen, the highest grossing animated film of all time, made its Broadway debut at the St James Theatre in New York. Finn Ross and FRAY Studio were commissioned to create the video content that would bring the story’s world of snow, ice and Northern Lights to the stage. The aim was to help translate the scale and magic of the film into a theatrical language that felt immediate, detailed and emotionally resonant.
FRAY collaborated closely with set and costume designer Christopher Oram and with Richard Nutbourne Scenic Studio to develop a new scenic technique that became a hallmark of the production. Working together, the team created a system in which scenery that appeared to be stone or wood under standard theatre lighting could transform into glowing ice when custom LED screens embedded beneath the surfaces were activated. This approach allowed the production to move seamlessly between the grounded world of Arendelle and its enchanted, crystalline counterpart.
The Aurora Borealis played a significant role throughout the show. It appeared as a shifting, atmospheric presence that threaded through the entire narrative. FRAY designed the aurora entirely through live rendering using Notch, powered by a Disguise GX2 server. This real time approach allowed the lights to move with fluidity and complexity, giving the stage a sense of depth and motion that supported key emotional moments.
The result is a visual system that expands the theatrical world of Frozen, blending innovation and storytelling to help the stage production capture the wonder and scale of the original film.
