Back To The Future

West End & Broadway

FRAY Studio contributed to the stage adaptation of Back to the Future, created by the film’s original writers Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, with music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard. The goal of the production was to bring the energy, humour and spectacle of the 1985 film into a live setting while expanding its visual language for the theatre.

Video design played a central role in shaping the world of the show. Hill Valley began as a familiar, everyday environment before erupting into something heightened and unpredictable whenever Doc Brown had a moment of inspiration. The video design also supported the show’s key set pieces, most notably the Delorean sequences, which needed to convey speed, danger and the thrill of hitting 88 miles per hour. These moments allowed the audience to experience the chaos and excitement of time travel in a theatrical context.

Content was delivered through a large 3.9 millimetre LED wall positioned upstage, paired with projection onto a gauze downstage. This combination created a layered environment that surrounded the action and helped transition between locations and time periods with clarity. The interplay of LED and projection also allowed the show to move between realism and heightened fantasy in ways that supported the pacing of the narrative.

The production was powered by a Disguise GX2 system and made extensive use of Notch, both as a real time engine and as a render engine platform. This workflow allowed the team to combine practical effects, dynamic lighting and responsive digital elements into a cohesive visual system.

The final design helped translate the iconic world of the film into a theatrical form that felt both faithful to the original and fully alive on stage.
