The Rolling Stones

Exhibitionism

Exhibitionism traces the fifty three year history of The Rolling Stones, beginning with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards meeting at Dartford Station in 1962 and continuing through the band’s most recent recordings and live performances. The exhibition spans hundreds of artefacts and an enormous volume of archival material, brought together to present one of the most influential journeys in modern music.

The scale of the installation reflects the scale of the band’s legacy. The exhibition features more than two hundred screens, thirty projectors, one hundred speakers, three hundred videos, one thousand photographs and one hundred Rolling Stones tracks. FRAY Studio developed the video content over the course of a year in close collaboration with the creative team. Together we worked through the extensive archive of images, film, audio and objects to build a cohesive narrative across multiple rooms.

FRAY produced four documentary films for the exhibition: The Stones on Film, The Stones on Stage, The Stones’ Music Videos, and a piece exploring the band’s deep relationship with the blues. Each film offered a different perspective on the band’s evolution and the ideas that shaped their music. We also created a three dimensional version of the band’s famous tongue and lips logo, mapping it with its various historic iterations, and developed several multi screen installations that explored early touring, studio work, personal style and the band’s many collaborators.

In addition, FRAY built two interactive iPad applications. One introduced visitors to the band’s recording process, and the other allowed users to remix eight Rolling Stones songs. A series of sound installations completed the experience, covering their early years living in Edith Grove, the songwriting partnership between Mick and Keith, and several rare archival recordings.

The result is an ambitious and immersive exhibition that brings the scale, creativity and cultural impact of The Rolling Stones to life across an expansive multimedia environment.
