Tammy Faye
FRAY Studio created the video design for the musical Tammy Faye, which tells the story of Tammy Faye Bakker’s rise to fame, her compassion driven outlook, and the ways those around her sought to use her generosity for their own ends. With music by Elton John and lyrics by Jake Shears, the production blends spectacle, satire and emotional storytelling, and the video needed to support this tonal range across the arc of the show.
The set is built from a large wall of television screens that open and close to reveal performers inside the structure. This created a natural foundation for a visual language rooted in broadcast imagery. The video design shifted between abstract textures for the darker and more surreal moments, and period accurate on screen graphics that reflected the visual style of Tammy Faye’s television era. The aim was to let the content feel authentic to the period while also supporting the show’s more heightened theatrical beats.
The video played a key role in carrying the energy of Lynn Page’s choreography. Quick cuts, colour shifts and rhythmic visual patterns helped amplify the pace of the movement and gave the stage a strong sense of motion. Because the screens were integrated into the physical design, the content needed to work as both a scenic layer and a storytelling tool, supporting transitions and guiding the audience through the shifts in tone.
The production was powered by Disguise GC2C media servers, which drove the LED walls that were fabricated directly into the scenery. This ensured precise control and clean integration between the visual content and the physical architecture of the set.
The final design helped create a vivid and dynamic environment that supported the spirit of Tammy Faye’s story with clarity and theatrical flair.
