BOOP! the musical
FRAY Studio designed the video world for BOOP!, a new musical inspired by Betty Boop’s iconic 1930s cartoons. The story follows Betty as she steps out of her black-and-white animated universe and into a vibrant, modern New York City, where she discovers love, colour, and adventure. Working in partnership with Fleischer Studios, we created a stage environment that blends authentic vintage animation with a contemporary visual take on NYC.
We were given full access to the Betty Boop archive, reviewing all 126 original cartoons to build a comprehensive library of scenic elements, character moments, patterns, and visual gags. Every black-and-white component seen on stage comes directly from Betty’s world, no new illustration was added. The goal was to preserve the integrity of the Fleischer style while translating it into a theatrical vocabulary that allowed Betty’s animated world to move, shift, and expand around her.
In contrast to the monochrome universe, we developed a vivid, colourful New York that felt lightly illustrative but sharper and more detailed. This contemporary world offered a visual counterpoint, connected to the animation through style, yet clearly distinct in tone and texture. At key moments, these two environments collide, allowing Betty’s cartoon aesthetic to spill into the real world and vice versa, creating striking and playful stage pictures.
The show’s visual system was built using Photoshop, After Effects, Cinema 4D, and Unreal Engine. All content was delivered through Disguise GX2C media servers powering a configuration of 2.5mm LED walls running in full 10-bit colour, ensuring clarity, richness, and depth across the entire stage.
The final design brought Betty’s world to life in a way that felt both faithful to her origins and dynamic within a contemporary theatrical setting.
